It's been an exciting year for owner, Pat Trefz. He adopted office mascot, Dakota, last August, got engaged over Christmas Break, and will be celebrating 16 years of business for Outside Productions this May! He's the fearless leader of the office, snack supplier, and overly tolerant of girl-talk, boss.  He always has a good story to tell about his sailing trips and days at the University of Florida, so we were excited to ask Pat some questions about his travels and interests outside of the office!

Pat, we know you've owned Outside Productions for nearly 16 years, with experience at other landscape architecture firms prior.  Before working in landscape architecture what was the most unusual job you had?
In high school I had a job clearing exotic plants out of lakes, by hand, up in Tampa.  It wasn't much fun wading around in lakes all day and clearing spots where alligators like to hang out.  That job didn't last long.

What song describes your work day?
'Time Keeps on Slipping' by Steve Miller Band

You went on a pretty special vacation this winter.  Where did you go and what was the occasion?  Do you have any favorite vacations prior?
Over winter break I went to Cancun and got engaged to a wonderful and beautiful lady.  Prior to that, it is a tie between several sailing trips to the BVI!

If you had to eat the same meal, every day for the rest of your life what would it be?
Pizza of course.

What's on your bucket list?
Transatlantic sailing trip from the US to Europe.
Whoa! How long would that take?
Longer than I'll probably take off from work! It probably would take a couple weeks.

We know you like to rock out in the office while you work. What is the first concert you attended?
In highschool I saw Scorpions where the new and unknown band Bon Jovi opened!

Katherine, landscape architect and project manager, just celebrated her 3rd anniversary here at team Outside Productions!  She has lived in Naples for 18 years and worked in the landscape architecture industry for 16 of those! She is our in-house Naples code expert, native plant guru, and teacher of all things Louisiana.  She has project managed some of our biggest community projects like Winding Cypress and Greyhawk at Golf Club of the Everglades, designed Jumby Bay which is located in Old Naples, and has worked with dozens of residential clients on everything from small courtyards to large Port Royal homes.  We had a blast catching up with her and hearing about her interests outside of the office.

Katherine, before working at Outside Productions, what was the most unusual or interesting job you had?
I sold t-shirts for concerts and Broadway plays at two theaters in New Orleans.  I got to see a lot of concerts and plays for free including 'Cats!' 14 times!

So you're a bit of a concert junkie then?  What was the first show you saw?
The B-52s in 1989 (Rock Lobster!)

You're known in the office for always bumping in to celebrities when you travel.  Who is the most famous person you've met?
I met Michael Jordan at Harrah's casino in New Orleans.  I also played a game of pool with the bass player from REM.

What song would you describes your day at work?
"It's 5 o'clock Somewhere"

Your family always goes on great vacations for Spring Break.  What is the best vacation you've been on?
My husband and I went to Scotland for our honeymoon without hotel reservations, just the tickets for the flight and a reservation for a rental car!  We went off-season and felt like we had the country to ourselves.  We even golfed at St. Andrews and saw the Loch Ness monster!

Finally, if you had to eat the same thing every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A fried shrimp po-boy, fully dressed.  Or maybe muffalettas...

It was an exciting weekend for one member of team OPi, Courtney, who ran her first (and self-proclaimed last) half-marathon at Disneyworld.  Courtney's role in the office is ever-changing, from drawing up construction documents, to marketing renderings, and helping her coworkers become more Apple-savvy.  Let's find out more about her her interests outside of work, training for a half marathon, and studying for her landscape architecture license exam!

Courtney, if you had to pick one song to describe your day at work what would it be?
Oh definitely "High Ho, High Ho, it's off to work we go!"  I am known for singing some Justin Timberlake in the office (sometimes with dance moves) and we almost always have music playing in the studio.  It makes the work day go by quickly and lets us have a good time while we work away.

What would people never guess you do in your role?
Most strangers don't know that lanscape architects actually design pools, entry signs, and outdoor living.  Those who know me well are always surprised to hear that I am the voice behind OPi's social media.  Surprise!

If you have to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Tacos.  So many tacos! I'd definitely need ice cream for dessert too.

What phobias do you have?
Unfortunately, more than a few.  I don't like bugs or spiders or snakes.  I usually beg someone in the office to lend a hand if I see a bug.  I'm also terrified of heights so I won't be skydiving like Andrea any time soon.

What's on your bucket list?
Well, I crossed one item off this weekend at my half-marathon!  It was a blast running around the Disney parks on a closed course before the crowds came, but I'm happy that one is crossed off- I'm very very sore today.  I also want to make it to ever single MLB stadium.  So far I've visited 12, but haven't been to games at all of them.

If you could max out your credit card at one store what would it be?
Target.  I get teased by the office because most days I come in saying "when I was at target last night..."  SuperTarget is even better because they have food AND fun stuff.  Think of the possibilities!

This week we are catching up with in-house "CAD Ninja" Lindsay.  Lindsay has been a part of team OPi for 9 years!  Her role in the office is ever changing, but she can always be relied upon to fix computers/ printers/ anything that uses electricity, ensure our office chocolate supply is full, and to teach our office mascot the newest tricks.

Lindsay, if you could max out your credit card at one store what would it be?
World Market or HomeGoods.  Between those two, I could throw a party every day!

What song describes your day at work?
Huey Lewis and the News – Workin’ for a Livin’

We know you like to take road trips, what is the best vacation you’ve been on?
A road trip to Austin, Texas – with our dog! (Dog, Austin, pictured below)

I already gave it away that you enjoy chocolate, but if you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Definitely BBQ – brisket or pulled pork

What phobias do you have?
A Google/Apple merger…Gapple? Aggle? Skynet?  (Now you see why we chose her to be our electronics guru)

What would you like to be famous for?
I am the last standing PC in an office of Mac’s!

As part of our new 2016 blog series about the studio at Outside Productions, we will be featuring an employee every few weeks.  To start of the series, we will be getting to know new mother, landscape architect, and project manager, Andrea Douglas-Cook!

What’sthe one thing, you can’t live without?

Andrea: Water of course.  My life expectance would be a mere 2 days without water, with water it extends to maybe three weeks.

What song describes a typical day at work for you?
Andrea: 9 to 5 – Dolly Parton

What about the best vacation you’ve been on?
Andrea: A trip to China I took with my husband a few years ago.  It was awesome to introduce a different culture to him and to see him grow in knowledge and understanding of my ancestry.

Here's a tricky one: if you had to eat one meal, every day for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Andrea: Vietnamese Pho, hands down.  It is the perfect balance between light and healthy.  It is a very simple delicious dish that would not get tiresome or overwhelming over time.  Yummy!

What’s on your bucket list?
Andrea: Visit every baseball stadium in the MLB… so far I have visited 3.  (Above is a photo of Andrea skydiving in early 2015.  We think she'll be the one to actually complete her bucket list!)

Last question, and sorry to hear you didn't win the Powerball last month, but what is the first thing you would buy if you won the lottery?
Andrea: Lunch for my coworkers.

Andrea joined the team at Outside Productions in August of 2014 and returned last month from maternity leave.  Her daughter, Angelica, was born on October 8th.  We love having Andrea as a part of the team.  She works on projects ranging from high-rise rooftop gardens, large scale community design, and residential design.  Andrea's vast knowledge of construction details comes in handy on a daily basis!  We're happy to have her back in the office cracking jokes and sharing her knowledge and experience.

Stay tuned to see who is featured next!
