We all know mistletoe as the plant that people kiss under but what really is mistletoe? Mistletoe is a plant that grows on trees like willow, apple, and oak trees. It is actually a parasitic plant that grows on branches or trunk of trees and sends out roots that penetrate into trees and take up nutrients. Mistletoe is also capable of growing on it's own and creating it's own food through photosynthesis. The mistletoe we are used to seeing during Christmas grows on trees as a parasite throughout New Jersey to Florida. The plant had always been one of the most magical plants in Europe, it was considered to bestow life and fertility. It was also considered a protection against poison and an aphrodisiac.

Kissing under the mistletoe tradition started with the Greek festival of Saturnalia but later in the eighteenth-century the English called it a kissing ball because of it's magical appeal. At Christmas time, a young lady standing under a ball of mistletoe cannot refuse to be kissed. If she remained unkissed then she could not expect to be married the following year. Even if that significant has been forgotten you can still find the custom of kissing under mistletoe in many European countries and in Canada. If a couple in love kisses under the mistletoe it is interpreted as a promise to marry as well as a prediction of life-long happiness. Today, kisses can be exchanged under the mistletoe at any time during the holiday season.

Outside Productions International had a holiday desk competition in the office to see who could decorate their desk the best. The competitors had a week to decorate their desks and the creator of the best desk received a $50 gift card of their choice. The competition ended on December 8th and voting started on our social media platforms to see which desk was the best. We posted all the desks and you were all able to vote on your favorite desks. All of the competitors put a lot of effort and created their best designs. The desks were each decorated differently and were all unique in their own ways. After a week long voting we counted up all the votes and were able to come up with the winner of the holiday desk competition. The winner of the competition is....

Desk D! Created by Andrea. Her desk was decorated with lights, presents, Santa and his sleigh, and a fireplace. The highlight of her desk decoration was her fireplace that was built out of a box wrapped in wrapping paper and her computer that had a fire displayed on it. Andrea wanted to give a special shout out to her husband for helping her create the fireplace by cutting a hole for her computer to fit in it and he made it a perfectly symmetrical hole. She chose two $25 gift cards that were to Starbucks and Bass Pro Shop for her and her husband to share. Andrea says the reason behind her fireplace is that it doesn't feel like Christmas without a fireplace, which took her 2 and half hours to complete.

Congratulations Andrea on having the best desk, good job to all the other competitors and thank you to everyone who voted.

Happy Holidays from Outside Productions International!
